OVERVIEW
When properly designed, an oil catch can will prevent sludge buildup in the intake, intercooler, throttle body, etc. They effectively raise fuel octane and increase engine performance with cleaner inlet air. Also, excessive oil collection can be an indicator of a damaged engine. Furthermore, they lower hydrocarbon emissions. Shown below are examples of a common OEM breather system (PCV and CCV) and the same system with catch cans installed.
Radium strongly recommends reviewing our technical article on catch cans to help better understand these breather systems and how they work. Click HERE to open it.
FLUID LOCK® CATCH CANS
In 2022, Radium Engineering implemented a revolutionary design change to the 7 fluid ounce standard catch can. An inherent problem always existed with typical catch cans when not serviced regularly. The fluid contaminants will eventually leave the reservoir pouring into the air intake system causing poor engine performance. To resolve this issue, Radium created the Fluid Lock® Catch Can. This contains a patented mechanism that prevents the reservoir from overfilling and traps the collected fluids until it is emptied.
NOTES
- If you are looking for universal kits with hoses and fittings included, click HERE
- Depending on the PCV system design, some engines may require multiple catch cans.
- Catch cans are NOT designed to be used with aftermarket crankcase vacuum pumps.
- Catch cans are sold without fittings. Some common fittings are available in the options on the right, but a full list of compatible 10AN ORB adapter fittings can be found HERE
- Some common hose sizes are available in the options on the right, but a full listing of bulk PCV hose in various sizes can be found HERE. They can be used with barb fittings and spring clamps, or with AN fittings and Pushlok hose ends.
SERVICING
These catch cans feature Radium Engineering's patent pending Fluid Lock® technology. if the catch can fills up and is not emptied, an internal valve closes eliminates contaminants from exiting entering engine. Furthermore it maintains normal venting through prohibiting engine damage.
For draining, there are a couple options depending on the application. If there is space, the lower half of the body that holds all of the contaminants simply unscrews. However, if there is no room to remove the lower half of the catch can, there is a 4AN ORB (7/16"-20) female threaded drain port. A 4AN ORB plug (shown below) is provided.
For remote draining, consider this petcock drain kit HERE.
SPECIFICATIONS
These Fluid Lock® catch cans are used in Radium Engineering application-specific catch can kits. They are machined from solid 6061 aluminum. The 2 halves and all ports are O-ring sealed, thus safe for pressurized (forced induction) applications. The main inlet and outlet ports are 10AN ORB (7/8" female threads). The integrated M8x1.25mm threaded dipstick unscrews for a quick way to check oil level. These catch cans feature advanced air/oil separation.
