fuel-hanger-surge-tank-can-am-maverick
Fuel Hanger Surge Tank, Can-Am Maverick

The Radium Engineering FHST (fuel hanger surge tank) is the ultimate solution for fuel starvation issues in the Can-am Maverick chassis. Due to insufficient baffling, fuel starvation is common when the UTV is driven aggressively. This results in unstable fuel pressure and possible engine damage from running too lean. This FHST is a fully functional fuel surge tank INSIDE the factory tank.

HOW THE FUEL HANGER SURGE TANK WORKS

The FHST contains a fuel pressure regulator, 2 pumps, and pre and post filters.

Even though both pumps are mounted inside the surge tank, the inlet of the lift pump is outside and transfers fuel from the open fuel tank into the FHST. Inside the surge tank, the lift pump outlet uses a reverse diffuser to control the stream, prevent overspray, and fuel foaming.

The surge tank pump is used to supply fuel to the engine through an integrated FPR (fuel pressure regulator). The surge tank pump is supplied with fuel from 3 different sources: the adjacent lift pump, the integrated FPR return, and three 355LPH one-way fill valves on the bottom of the surge tank that allows fuel in, but not out.

PUMPS

The FHST requires 2 fuel pumps (lift pump and surge tank pump).

For the lift pump, the factory Can-Am (155LPH) pump will suffice. However, an aftermarket 38-39mm pump (such as a Walbro GSS342) can be used for extra flow into the surge tank.

The surge tank pump can be brushed or brushless (see pump compatibility).

INTEGRATED FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR

Using the provided vacuum port fittings (described below), the FPR can be configured 2 different ways. If an intake manifold vacuum hose is connected to the port, the regulator will operate at a 1:1 ratio permitting fuel pressure to proportionally increase with manifold (boost) pressure. Conversely, the vacuum port can plugged and fuel pressure will remain constant (like factory).

Furthermore, the regulator vacuum port features a 360 degree swiveling feature that is double O-ring sealed. It permits the installer to quickly point the vacuum fitting in any direction with no tools required.

The returning low pressure fuel from the FPR is sent back into the surge tank keeping it full.

Fuel pressure changes are made easy with a patented tool-free adjustment knob.

There are 4 interchangeable #10-32 threaded vacuum port fittings provided to cover all scenarios:

Barbed Fitting: A black zinc-plated 3/16" (5mm) barb machine from high strength steel that is compatible with the following vacuum hoses: 5/32" (4mm), 3/16" (5mm), and 7/32" (6mm).

3AN Male Fitting: A black zinc-plated adapter machined from high strength steel that is compatible with 3AN hose ends

Push-To-Connect: A nickel-plated brass fitting with Buna-N O-rings that is compatible with hard plastic 1/4" OD tubing

Vacuum Plug: A black oxide stainless steel screw that is used to maintain a constant (non dynamic) fuel pressure. Beginning in the mid 1990s, vehicle manufacturers started transitioning to returnless fuel systems to lower EVAP emissions. To keep temperatures lower, these regulators are mounted inside the tank and do NOT have the ability to be vacuum referenced. This plug would be required in this scenario.

NOTE: When installing the vacuum fitting, it is recommended to use a wicking medium-strength thread locker.

PLUMBING

The OEM feed line snaps into the provided SAE quick connect fitting. These serviceable connections are hermetically sealed and impervious to all standard and exotic fuels. Non conductive anodized aluminum acorn nuts are provided to prevent any accidental short circuiting. Electrical hardware is included for the fuel pumps and OEM level sender. Furthermore, the in-tank wiring is insulated with high quality chemically resistant ETFE.

One relay, one fuse, and all associated wiring and hardware is provided to install the surge tank pump.

OPTIONAL 20-0806 FUEL HANGER FPR BLOCK-OFF

This Radium fuel pump hanger can be converted from a built-in regulator dead head system, to a return style system. We understand some users want to run an engine bay mounted regulator with a return line back to the tank. This kit makes that possible. The parts in the kit disable the built-in regulator allowing the use of an external regulator elsewhere in the system. The fuel hat features a plugged return port that can be used for the return line from the external regulator.

For connecting a return hose to the return port, a 6AN ORB (9/16"-18) fitting is required.

A fuel pressure regulator (not included) must be installed downstream in the system.
